Personally I would never reuse or refill an ink cartridge. i have the same model printer which is a great printer. It has print heads that clean the cartridges every time you reboot your printer. To save ink keep the printer on all the time. Plug it in to the wall not a power bar.
It has a built in circuit breaker and it has a sleep mode. When you keep it on after a certain period of time it actually goes to sleep. If you continually turn the printer off with your computer ever time it starts the print heads clean the cartridge which prevents it from smudging or drying out. Every time it does this you deplete approximately 2% of your ink cartridges.
