    FM= 'Frequency Modulation' travels in a straight line--

    AM= Amplitude Modulations' Bounces waves

    In FM broadcast the signal will go through mountains and tunnels, parking garages etc, you won't lose the signal

    In Am broadcast, you lose the signal as it will bounce off of mountains and buildings.. This is why when you are listening to AM it will drop out.. Ironically, AM broadcast will travel further due to 'skip'-- This means that the beam bounces off the ionosphere and back to earth thousands of miles away. Since FM uses 'ground plane' it does not bounce and travels a straight line it eventually goes off into space...
