A lung nodule is a pulmonary nodule usually referred to a mass of tissue in the lungs. Mostly lung nodules are benign and non-cancerous. But when they are found in large masses they can be signs of cancer. Symptoms of these nodules are subtle and they create a tight feeling in the chest. When the nodules are found to be non-cancerous they may be caused by a variety of symptoms that affect the lungs. One of the examples of nodule formation is the tuberculosis caused by the bacteria called mycobacterium tuberculosis also produces nodules in the lungs when it spreads. In other cases benign lung nodules can be caused by blood vessel abnormalities. Another infection called histoplasmosis also causes lung nodules. A chest x-ray or a computerized tomography can be done to examine the nodules in the lungs. Nodules that are less than one inch are usually non-cancerous while the nodules larger than one inch may be cancerous which needs further tests to ensure that they do not grow else a biopsy test has to be taken and the cell samples from the lung tissue had to be examined for cancer. Benign lung nodules usually don't need any medication but when the nodules are caused to some diseases then a proper medication has to be given to the person. Repeated x-rays should be taken to ensure that the nodules no longer exist. But in case if the nodules are found to be cancerous then the cancer cells has to be surgically removed from the lungs when the disease is at the initial stage. When the disease has not been diagnosed at the early stage then it will spread to other organs where the surgery will not work out and treatments like radiation and chemotherapy has to be given to the person.
