This is a difficult question for a lot of the experts (in opinion and looking up stuff) to respond to effectively.
When I solve for an unknown, I work through the equation, trying to get the unknown on one side of the equals sign and the known value on the other.
I'm not a big fan of graphing. It is cumbersome, time-consuming, and I don't understand how that would solve an equation in the first place.
Substitution works for me only if I can't work through the order of operations and reach my goal (unknown = specific value)
For me, methodically working my way through the equation is my first choice; it is ordered and logical, and easily verified.
