The Illinois and Michigan canals link the Mississippi River and the Great lakes. As early as the 1670s, French explorers had proposed a canal to connect the Great Lakes and Mississippi River waterways, but it was not until 1810 that the United States took up the idea as a way to develop the vast interior of the new country.
