The sky is blue due to Rayleigh scattering. The visible light coming from the sun is a combination of many different colors. Most of the colors go through the air molecules, but the blue light-waves are absorbed by the air molecules and then radiated back in all directions. That's why wherever you look some of this blue will radiate back at you, and so the sky seems blue.
