Go to the left hand side of your screen at the bottom and click on the Icon in the corner. After you do that you'll see a list of programs. Pick a program that might say, Microsoft Word. A screen as you call it, will come up that will allow you to write whatever you like.
I'm not really that great with computers myself, but I think that will help you do what you want. You can click on any of those programs listed there to open them.

Remember to "save" whatever you write because once you close the program all work will disappear if you have not saved it.
