      Make a really fat person sit down on it. If it does not break than you have a well made chair.

            Jenn is on the right track.Check the joins.make sure they are not loose.most quality chairs will be double dowelled.Cheap chairs are held together by torpedo bolts & screws.There should be no visible screws in a quality chair.
