Why do Moto GP riders drop their left leg just prior to entering a left turn?

Many riders drop the leg just prior to the turn and then place it back on the foot peg when negiotiating the turn.  They don't seem to place the leg on a higher peg so why do they drop it?

    So they don't fall over.

Only inexperienced riders do that or riders taking a turn too fast and instinct makes them drop their leg to maintain balance.
