    Watertanks in New York

    I always wonder why watertanks are on many rooftop in NY and not or not so much in other city's? What is the use? They must be expensive to build and maintain.

      they are accutally antique forms of air condition. the tanks you see hold water as you might have gussed .the water is then plumbed down through out the entire building walls top to bottom. similiar in fashion to a car radiator,when the water gets to the bottom it's then pumped back to the top,the prosess is ongoing like a fountain. its not just NY. its found in most cities with older buildings

        When I was there I was told that in case of a fire, the tank would burn through and water would pour down the stairwell and put out the fire. Seems unlikely.
