How long does it really take for a bank to process a check?

some banks take two days, some take eight days not including weekends... I think it is all done electronically and it should only take at the most two days.

These days it's a lot faster than it used to be.  Much of funds can be had within 24 hours.  Some banks still hold our funds for as long as a few days.  Why?  To make sure there's good money in your account and secondly, they get to float your money, meaning using your money for the benefit of the bank.  You may say it's only a few hundred dollars but let me assure you that a few hundred dollars from each of us will quickly become millions to the banks.
