    Fireplace damper

If a fireplace damper is not closed during the winter and there is no fire in the fireplace will the heat from the house go up the chimney?

    Of course it would.

    of course, heat rises

Yes it will, you can buy a chimney balloon ,put it up the chimney slightly blown up then blow it up completely ,this saves a lot of heat loss.
