It derives from the location of the original Metropolitan Police headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place, which had a rear entrance on a street called Great Scotland Yard.

The origanal police H.Q. had a road leading to the back entrance called Scotland yard, after a period of time it was referred to as SCOTLAND YARD and the name stuck, when the H.Q. was relocated to a another area they called it NEW SCOTLAND YARD. Sorry 6dogs4us did not read you answer first but i did happen to know this thanks to sattelite television.
