By definition, traction is a direct function of friction. The more surface area the tire has on the pavement the more friction thus better traction. Think of it like this: most race cars (think NASCAR) run on "slicks" in order to optimize traction. While you're at it, think of a race track being virtually clear of any debris and always dry. "Slicks" would be impractical for every day driving and certainly unsafe in the rain where hydroplaning could easily occur (and loss of control, even worse than glare ice). That is precisely why NASCAR does not race in the rain.
