People from Holland are called Duch, by English speaking people. This word in the English counterpart of the Dutch words,Diets, and Duits. In Dutch, Duits means German, where the Dutch call themdselves Deutsche. Around 1290 in the Notheran and Easteran part of Neitherlands the word was (Duutsc)and as Frisian people (living in North) spoke a language much more like English. The English adopted from Frisian duutsc. Later Duutsc became the Dutch word for our eastern neighbours: Duets(German)

The term Netherlands (Dutch 'Nederland') is relatively recent. Earlier, the Dutch called themselves 'Nederduitsch' (Lower Germans) and indeed considered themselves to be a kind of Germans. Nowadays the Dutch call themselves 'Nederlanders' and only the Germans are referred to as 'Duitsers'. But in English the earlier name has stuck.
