The Bastille at the time was an old prison due for closure. It held only 7 prisoners none of them revolutionaries. There were 4 forgers, two lunatics, and one count accused of helping his sister run away from her husband. It was attacked because the mob heard a rumour that it contained a large amount of gunpowder.
