    what is the hottest temperature a water heater can heat up to?

    A water heater can boil water and explode. Thermostats are supposed to limit the maximum heat but they all vary, 140 F is about the most you would want, it's still too hot for children and you must be careful. 160 F will scald your skin. So even if you water heater can reach these temperatures doesn't mean they are safe. As I said before a water heater can boil water, if for several reasons it doesn't or no longer has the ability to sense the heat. In that case your water heater should have a safety device that will open and let the boiling water blow off and hopefully it is piped to the outside of your house.
