Ignore that superior advice. Just open the tailgate and manually close the latch with a spoon/screw driver etc. The light switch is in the latch mechanism. Then you can leave the tail gate open without flattening the battery.
Activate the handle, inside handle is easy, to release the latch before you close the tailgate.
