is it possible to save your data on an ipad that state to hook it up to itunes

Our Ipad is asking to be restored when it is hooked up to iTunes, problem is it has never been backed up. It has the USB cord and an iTunes icon on the screen when you turn it on. Is it possible to reset the ipad without restoring it??
