Males cats especially want to mark their territory. There are sprays and things you can buy that supposedly stop the scent so they won't mark there anymore, but good luck. My male cat didn't stop until he marked all around the baseboard. :(
I finally took out my carpeting and put in a floor covering that I could easily wipe up.
