I have used Gmail for years, but now I'm unable to add attachments to my outgoing mail. What to do?

Yes I have rebooted and also tried re-installing gmail; the problem persists. I do not dare to uninstall google first because I'm afraid I will loose my contacts list and possibly earlier messages.
