DNA - is deoxyribonucleic acid. . Genes (molecules of DNA) are the basic units of hereditary transmission. DNA also provides the genetic code which determines the development and metabolism of cells controlling RNA synthesis. The sequetial order of the components that make up RNA determines the amino acid composition of proteins in turn dtermines the functions of proteins and thereby of cells.
