It was used as a tool, and a diver's life depended on it is a popular refrain in HODINKEE stories about dive link watches. And it's not an exaggeration – there was a time, from the '50s to the link late '80s, before dive computers became ubiquitous when a properly functioning dive watch kept divers safe from an untimely demise. A link dive watch could accurately time critical elements of a dive, like bottom time, decompression stops, and even surface intervals.
That’s about it – the engraving on the link back says “water resistant” but the degree of water resistance is not otherwise specified. The mark does give the watch a kind of game defiance in the face of the elements – sort of like the pre-Vita Rays Steve Rogers, in Captain America, refusing to back down from a beating from a back-alley bully and saying, link through a bloody link nose, “I could do this all day.”
