It seems that the Catholic view gives the person the opportunity to "purify" itself through "temporal" punishment to get him ready for heaven. That being said, just think of it, as if the punishment one puts itself thru through bad choices here on earth is not enough, therefore you must go through round 2 in order to be ready for heaven. That's why the goodnews is goodnews - accept Christ as your personal saviour and His blood covers your bill, paid in full. The only requirements - believe (a gift God gives you), and surrending of the will to Christ(another gift from God Himself, where you get divine power to crufified the lusts of the flesh(the old way of living life, motives, objectives)). Turn your eyes to Christ and the things of this world will grow dimn.

Now, accepting this give is your title to heaven! I bet you that Satan himself was caught by surprise as he did not expected God's wild card as how He was going to deal with the sin problem - the giving up of His Son, as prove of His Righteous love for His creatures! I agree that "the most difficult thing to understand is how a religion predicated upon love and forgiveness has been the cause of such pain", One needs to understand the following, 1- either we, Christians, do not understand fully what it means to be born again (new nature, giving to us), therefore, we live a religion based on "misconceptions" acting out contrary to the "real nature" of Christ, therefore casting a "cloud" of unbelief in the mind of the world, or 2- Satan is doing his best to keep the message of the "new birth" misunderstood, so the real power behind the message fails to produce what it was meant to do - By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you[a] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” Today, I tell you that, the true sons of God will live out this prayer so the world can decide one way or another wether to believe or not. I doubt it, he is God!, But He gives a special message to John (book of Revelation)and what is HIS message, "Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— 7 saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” Did you catch what HIS command is...Worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water! Now, how does Sunday observance accomplishs this? I do not know. I only know that out of the seven days that Christ used to create, He, Christ, only blessed, set apart, and santified the "space" of time that constituted this particular day-the seventh day!
