When a worker has a documented exposure to blood, OSHA requires that the employer offer the Hepatitis B vaccine (at no cost).
After a report of an exposure indicent is made, the employer shall make immediately available to the employee a confidential medical evaluation and follow-up, including the following elements:
*documentation of the route of exposure, and under what circumstances the exposure occured
*identification and documentation of the source individual
*testing of the source individual's blood (after their consent is obtained) to determine HBV and HIV infectivity
*results of source individual's testing shall be made available to exposed employee.
*employee's blood will be collected for baseline testing of HBV and HIV.
*post-exposure prophylaxis will be given when medically indicated, as recommended by the U.S. Public Health Service.
*counseling will be made available to the exposed employee.
