Chickens eat weeds, grass, spinach or similar leaf, fruit, not citrus, they will eat the skins of fruits too, bread, food leftovers. Do not give them fish, it taints the eggs, worms, maggots if your bin has them, turn it down and let them do their cleaning up, bugs and fatty meat. Meat is good for them during the winter. It helps them to keep laying their eggs. I've heard they catch and eat mice too, I don't think mine have.

When free range they will eat almost anything small enough to get down. When i am shoeing horses i often have chickens, cocks etc.. eating the hoof filings that comes from the horses hooves along with grit, bread and yes - horse muck, or should i say the undigested grain embedded in it.
