When it was formally established as a protected area by the state link of Alaska in 1973 the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve didn't save the bald eagle in North America. The founding link of the park territory was still a full ten link years after the bald eagle population in the lower 48 had hit rock bottom with barely 400 known nesting pairs in the wild.
