    Movies show that in the aristocracy way back in Marie Antoinette's time, that skirts were way to wide. Why?

          Well there was no form of birth control and the idea was that if you had to struggle with all that clothing you would lose the urge.

              I'll answer my own question. They had huge hips and that was a good way to cover them.
