What Is a Coverlet in Bedding?

A coverlet is a lightweight bedspread that is sometimes quilted and sometimes woven. Coverlets are generally considered only as decoration and are placed over the general bedding on a bed. They can also be used as throws on a bed or a couch. Most bedding stores carry a variety of different weights and sizes of coverlets. Antique coverlets are also popular collector's items.

The word "coverlet" comes from two French words that mean "to cover" and "bed."
