It's not gold that is in a catalytic converter. I believe it is platinum. Don't know how healthy it would be doing what you are talking about. But, you can cut one open with a 1/16" cutting wheel on a standard hand held grinder. Be careful of where the sparks fly and make sure you don't twist the cutting wheel or it can fly apart. Make sure you wear safety glasses or a face shield. Some people collect these and take them to a junkyard intact. Much easier I would think!
