Go to settings.Click on "General" and scroll half way down the page and look for .....

Vacation responder:
(sends an automated reply to incoming messages. If a contact sends you several messages, this automated reply will be sent at most once every 4 days)

Why would you need an away message for your e-mail? I do not believe there is such a thing. But then again, I don't use gmail.
