    why was the international space station assembled in space and not launched as a complete satellite?

    Because its enormous and there is no way of sending it to space in one piece. Also, there are many thing attached to it (satellite dishes and many other things) that would fall off it in the first seconds after the launch if the whole space station would be launched to space.
