      I don't think there's a set distance. I'd just account for possible winter swell to the ground and allow a few inches for it. 3 inches max in my opinion.

        Go along with Colleen on the Max 3", but normally go 2" myself. If "grounded" they do tend to draw water and rot from the bottom.
