Does anyoneknow why choristers in most UK churches and Cathedrals wear a ruff or collar? Is there an official/litergical reason?

Thanks to carmaxable for their reply. However, I'd have thought that being taught to hold a hymnn book correctly would have done this; also some ruffs are so limp (unstartched) that they fall flat onto the shoulder, and the Eaton collars worn by, amongst others, Westminster Cathedral also fail to direct the head in the right direction. I m wondering if there is a litergical reason. Can anyone elso offer an additional explanation please?
