the ban on sinn fein (ourselves alone) was imposed by margaret thatchers government on 19 oct 1988 and was lifted under john majors government on 17 sept 1994.among others to criticise it was jeremy paxman (newsnight)who claimed he couldn't give the interviewees a proper 'grilling'.
