What causes gram negative rods in blood? Can it affect heart?

dau-in-law in hospital for pneumonia for several days. Released. Within 24 hrs readmitted. Told tests showed she had gram negative rods growing in her blood and they were afraid it went to her heart. Echo scheduled. Told she would probably be on IV antibiotics for several days in hospital before being released. Would continue antibiotics while home. Has had Lyme for 14 years. (Just found out 5 yrs ago.) Also has prolapsed heart valve.

Gram negative rods are the terms used to define a specific bacteria.
All bacteria/viruses can have a bad affect on the heart even if there are no oehter problems with the heart. The prolapsed valve could exacerbate the problem.
