Try a travel-agent. The trains in Bangkok are better than Australian trains. Their trains are very clean, air-conditioned and efficient. The stations are very clean too. I don't know about the trains that travel to the countryside. We always found people who speak English in Bangkok.

Thank you for your answerbut I really wanted information on timings. I HAVE TRAVELLED ON THE TRAIN BEFORE but not for some time, I agree with your comments regarding the service, excelllent but I have now decided to go to Penang with Air Asia to arrive at a reasonable time . Can't wait to get back in the lovely warm weather of Malaysia!
