It could very well be a term of endearment, and the person feels close enough that they can converse with you on that level. I wouldn't necessarily say it is intended in a derogative way, as people usually only talk with someone in that manner if they like them and feel comfortable doing so. Do you dress in a manner that your belly button is always showing? Or are you short? These characteristics of your own would give you more insight into the mindset of the person saying that. A lot of insight can be gained in looking at the person's facial expression when they say this, for if their face genuinely lights up and they smile when they see you...you obviously represent something good to that person.

You could always just simply ask, and that would alleviate the possibility of any misunderstanding between the two of you. I say this, in that, outside of you two, no one really knows in what context that person says that. If you don't like being called that, you can always say, "Please don't call me that."
