The outside posts have not fared particularly well over the past three decades. Posts PP 17-PP 20 are a combined 2 for 68 over the past 33 years.

There is a long run into the first turn at Churchill Downs, and post PP 15 and PP 16 each account for three Derby winners, meaning that the far outside posts are not the kiss of death.

The best place to break appears to be somewhere between post PP 5 and PP 10, which have accounted for 16 of the past 33 Derby winners.

The best post over that period is post PP 10, which has accounted for six Derby winners.
