When it "dies" is there any power at all to the car? Lights work? Engine will at least turn over? Does the check engine light come on? Does it make any weird sounds before it just dies? Have you had the fuel filter replaced recently? Could even be a bad fuel pump. I'm peering into the dark here with not enough information from you. ;)
If it dies while driving, this could be two areas, fuel and spark, both of these areas have subcategories.. I don't know what you are driving, late model or older, fuel injected or carbed, computer controlled or needle valves..

timing belt is definitely one area but when it goes, you're dead in the water. Is this an intermittent thing? Or did it happen only once and you can not restart??

This list of probables is too long without more info..
    Check the timing belt
