I've recently dealt with this. Obviously check that speakers are turned on, check that it is properly plugged into correct "speaker" outlet in the back and that if it has an usb second connection, that it is plugged inti the corillating usb iutlet in the back of your hardrive.
At the right bottom of screen, right click or left click on the speaker symbol and verify that volume is not muted on the main setting.
