Darbees had this tip: I've had two occasions where I've dealt wih an artex ceiling. One I removed the whole ceiling which created a horrendous mess throughout the house. The other I plasterboarded over it and had it skimmed, in that way the boards are nailed to the joists so there is no weight problem, that took a day which was much less than removing the ceiling after all the cleaning up. Far less domestic strife too! You will most likely damage the plaster anyway if you try to scrape, chip or steam it off so the plasterer will be needed whatever route you take.
