Area code 732 was created on June 1, 1997, as the result of a split in New Jersey area code 908[1], and became mandatory on December 6 of that year. The area code mostly covers the Jersey Shore region of New Jersey, with a small area of North Jersey covered. The area includes Middlesex and Somerset counties in Central Jersey and Union county in North Jersey, and Monmouth, Middlesex, and Ocean counties on the Jersey Shore.
