An iPad, like all machines, will get hot. Especially if it's left on for too long (Say non-stop until the battery is dead). But handheld devices aren't meant to get hotter than is comfortable to hold. If you're experiencing overheating issues with your iPad you'd do best to take it to the shop to be looked at in case there's something wrong with it.
