I don't believe any vegetables REQUIRE peat-free compost.
The reason peat-free is offered is because it is not considered a renewable resource. The natural peat bogs cannot restore themselves at the rate that man is taking from them.
Correct paintergirl. Unfortunately peat is an excellent additive for anything that you grow in a garden. The extra nitrogen it provides will make everything grow huge, flowers or vegetables. Unfortunately it has to be added each year to obtain the same results, thus you are expending the resource by buying it each year - and then there is the cost which also will get higher and higher as we use up all the resources.
