Oil based varnishes are usually polyuretane based & can be either 1 pack (used straight out of the can) OR 2 pack. (part 2 being the hardener.)These varnishes are thinned & cleaned up with mineral turpentine.
Acrylic or water based varnishes are easier to use & are usually longer lasting.
Neither have much of an effect on the actual wood as the don't have the penetration. For that effect you need to use something like a decking oil.Hope this helps.
Strange as it may seem water based or, acryllic, varnish gives a longer lasting and harder finish than oil based. This with the exception of 2 pack which gives the hardest coating of all.
Take my advise and use acryllic, water based it is so much easier to use and you can control the depth of colour much easier by wiping with a damp rag. Always give a final coat of clear.
As far as effect, the oil based tends to soak in more than acryllic and is harder to remove at a later time should you wish to do so. Oil based also tends to darken with age and discolour.
