There were a 7, 8, and 9 originally planned by George Lucas, but he decided later not to do them. He did not have a reason - other than the incredible amount of work and time it would take - but I hope he reconsiders or lets someone else produce them in the future. So yes, nine episodes WERE planned, but they nipped it and finished things off pretty well at the end of "Jedi..."
