There are many different causes of heart murmurs. They can be caused by a heart attack, high blood pressure, rheumatic fever, pregnancy, fever, thyrotoxicosis or anemia. Thyrotoxicosis is a condition caused by an overactive thyroid gland.
There are two kinds of murmurs, innocent and abnormal. The innocent are typically too much blood flowing through the heart. This happens many times to pregnant women who have extra blood for the child in the womb.

The abnormal is more serious, and can be from heart defects in the heart, valves, and even a "hole" in the heart.
