No. I have done this many times. Just make sure the phone you buy is compatible with your current carrier, and has not unpaid bills associated with it (the ESN is clear). Then, just go to your mobile company's store, or call their customer service. It only takes 10 minutes or so to switch service from your old phone to the replacement one you just bought.
