Cayenne pepper.. They don't like that stuff and the plants love it. Not too much, its expensive, I little in your potted plants will do the trick for awhile-- At least until they pass out environmental hazard coveralls to each other.. lol

We have a peacan orchard.. they eat our enter yield this past year. We cant get rid of them we shot them and they just come back.

My Dad used to use a Havahart trap and them relocate them across town. The only problem is that when one or two are relocated, one or two more claim the territory. It's a never ending battle!

Sometimes when the squirrels are digging in your plants it is to bury nuts. Of course you don't want nuts in your plants, and the dumb things never remember what they do with their nuts anyway, so throw them out. The only problem, they come back to bury more nuts.

Short of killing them? You can't.
Squirrels will only dig into your potted plants ONCE. If there is nothing there worth eating they won't be back.
